What is factoring? And why should I learn how to factor?

Have you ever been so curious to find out what something was made of that you just had to take it apart? Maybe it was a clock, a telephone, even an old car engine. All people get this urge from time to time — even mathematicians, only when they get the itch, they take apart mathematical expressions — by factoring.

When you factor, you’re taking a mathematical expression and breaking it into its basic parts by finding factors, the terms that multiply together to give you the expression. And just as taking apart a clock helps you understand what makes it tick, factoring an expression helps you see how it works. In short, you factor so you can learn what mathematical expressions are made of.
